A tight duel leads Team Bourque to victory over Team Brière

Team Bourque emerged victorious from the first matchup of Day 2 at the 2024 QMJHL Cup thanks to a 4-3 overtime win over Team Brière at Boisbriand’s Centre d’excellence Sports Rousseau on Friday afternoon.

In this victory, Team Bourque forward Samuel Rochon led the way with two goals and an assist, while Ryan Howard finished the game with two helpers of his own. For Team Brière, forwards Enzo Lottin, Aiden Kirkwood and Justin Thibault all found the back of the net.

After 28 shots on goal in yesterday’s 9-1 win over Team Marchand, the Bourque squad fired 38 today at goaltender Xavier Caron. Team Brière took 39 shots on goal in its 10-0 win over Team Dobson yesterday, before firing 41 shots against Vincent Moreau today.

It was Team Bourque’s Samuel Boyer who opened the scoring nearly six minutes into the first period. But less than 90 seconds later, Justin Thibault replied by scoring the equalizer that saw the opening period end in a 1-1 tie.

After 10 minutes of close play between the two teams in the second frame, Aiden Kirkwood gave Team Brière its first lead when he pounced on a puck that had not been completely frozen by Moreau. Then, with 32 seconds left in the period, Lottin followed up to give his team a 3-1 lead.

Team Bourque’s reply came early in the third period when Rochon made the most of a power play to score his team’s second goal of the game. Rochon would find the back of the net again at 6:49 of the third when he fired a shot past Caron to tie the score at 3-3.

Team Bourque trailed 4-3 in shots on goal during the overtime period, but still came away with the win when Louis-Félix Gagnon sealed the outcome with his first tally of the tournament.

Team Bourque will attempt to remain unbeaten tomorrow when it takes on Team Lecavalier at 2:45pm ET. As for Team Brière, it’ll be looking for its second win when it takes on the Savard squad at 5:45pm ET.
