Sam Berthiaume pulled off a 30-save shutout to win a goaltending duel with Benjamin Tremblay and help Team Savage blank Team Bergeron 3-0 on Friday morning to kick off the second day of QMJHL Cup action at Boisbriand’s Centre d’excellence Sports Rousseau.
This matchup was a far cry from those of the first day, during which 24 goals were scored in two games. This time, Berthiaume and Tremblay (26 saves) remained perfect until Christopher Kelly scored the winning goal with 7:38 to go in the third period.
Deryck Lemaire and Jayden Napon (empty net) were the other goal scorers for Team Savage, who earns its first win in two outings.
Team Bergeron and Team Savage were probably the most physical teams on the first day of activities, and they picked up where they left off on Friday. All this with much better defensive play, as the defenders blocked numerous shots.
Berthiaume set the tone for the game. The Nova Scotia-born goalkeeper came out hot with a few pad stretches in the opening minutes, particularly at the expense of Zakary Horvat-Édouard, who tried firing home a rebound.
But the biggest play of the game, and perhaps of the entire 2025 QMJHL Cup, came from Tremblay. In the final moments of the opening period, he stretched his stick out at the very last second to make a key save, denying Lemaire of what seemed like a sure goal.
The second period continued in the same fashion, with a few scrambles occurring behind the play. In the third, Berthiaume made two more important saves to shut the door on Loïk Gariépy and Matys St-Gelais. Team Savage’s defense did the rest of the work.
The two teams now have a record of one win and one loss. Team Savage plays its final round robin game at 5:45 pm ET against Team Talbot, while Team Bergeron crosses paths with Team Daigle at 8:15 p.m.
