Team Savard ended the preliminary round of the 2024 QMJHL Cup with a third win in as many games, thanks to a 7-2 win over Team Brière on Saturday evening at the Centre d’excellence Sports Rousseau in Boisbriand, QC.
Nine different scorers got their names on the scoresheet in the final game of the day. Gabriel Comtois and Aiden Kirkwood were the only scorers for Team Brière, while goals from Liam Boisclair, Romain Litalien, Lucas Vincelette, Charles-Albert Pouliot (twice), Dylan Laframboise and Thomas Rousseau led Team Savard to victory.
In net, goaltender Rafaël Courchesne made 24 saves to earn the win, while Jacob Sass was solid despite facing 41 shots in the loss.
The start of the game was extremely tight between both teams, with the defensemen leaving very little space to opposing forwards. Then, at 6:47, Boisclair received a pass in the slot from Dylan Rozzi that he redirected in the back of the net to open the scoring.
Team Brière evened things up less than three minutes later thanks to Gabriel Comtois’ first goal of the tournament. Team Savard regained its lead with just 13 seconds left in the first period when Rousseau served a brilliant pass to Litalien to head into the first intermission up 2-1.
Team Savard kept its momentum going, scoring all four goals in the second period. Vincelette hit the target at 13:34, before Pouliot scored twice in a 36-second span just under two minutes later. Laframboise then gave his club a 6-1 lead by scoring his second of the tournament with 16 seconds left in the second period.
Team Savard’s lack of discipline in the third frame led to Aiden Kirkwood’s power play goal at 12:56. Équipe Savard forward Thomas Rousseau then found the back of the net to deliver his team’s seventh and final goal of the game.
